After an adventurous week in Nelson and surrounding areas, we headed south to explore other parts of New Zealand’s South Island. We rented a car, rather than taking the Bongo, to ensure plenty of space for our luggage and a significantly more comfortable ride.
Driving from Nelson to Hokitika
Sierra and Kyle took turns driving as Mary Kay and I enjoyed the beautiful views. Our first night was at an AirBnB in Hokitika but we took the full day to get there with many stops along the way including lunch along Buller River.
Exploring Fox River Beach
After a brief stop for lunch along the river, we visited Fox River Beach. We walked across Fox River and explored the beautiful rock tunnels on the beach.
One Night in Hokitika
Our day ended in Hokitika where we rented a small cottage on the beach. We arrived and settled in just in time for a beautiful sunset. Mary Kay and I were exhausted from our busy day and chose to go to bed rather than venturing out after dark with Sierra and Kyle to look for glow worms. The next morning, after a good nights rest, I regretted my missed opportunity but enjoyed the picture they took of a rock wall with glowworms that looks like a night sky with stars.
