After saying goodbye to our many friends at the Tucson KOA, Tom and I hit the road for home... Pikes Peak or Bust!
Arizona to New Mexico
During our first day we drove over 430 miles from Tucson, Arizona to the outskirts of Albuquerque, New Mexico. We stopped for fuel in San Simon, Arizona just before crossing into New Mexico. The gas station/travel center has a nice dog park where Aly took a quick potty break. We stopped for a "driver's" break in Hatch, New Mexico so Tom and I could lay down and stretch out a bit after all the sitting. After a short rest we were back on the road. The sun was setting as we passed through Socorro but we pressed on a little farther, reaching the southern edge of Albuquerque, before stopping for the night. We found a great boondocking site in the large RV/Truck parking lot at the Isleta Resort and Casino. It was quiet with plenty of room to park.
New Mexico to Colorado
Tom and I got an early start after a restful night boondocking in the Isleta parking lot. We were more than halfway home but still had just over 400 miles to go. We refueled at a nearby gas station and were back on the road by 5am. It was still dark as we passed through Santa Fe with just a hint of light across the sky. Halfway between Santa Fe and Las Vegas (NM not NV) the sun finally appeareed above the horizon. We drove 160 miles before stopping for a break and breakfast at the Fort Union Rest Area. After our short break we continued north over Raton Pass and into Colorado. We caught our first glimpse of Pikes Peak, far in the distance, as we passed through Walsenburg and we got an even better view as we passed through Pueblo. Our drive took us as far north as Colorado Springs before we headed west into the Colorado Rockies and our home in Woodland Park.
Tom and I arrived home to a magnificent view of Pikes Peak just in time for lunch. A beautiful end to another fantastic roadtrip!
